Rachael’s story (not our founder… another Rachael!):
Her mare’s symptoms:
· Loose droppings
· Tail swishing
· Refusal to go forward
· Kicking out at the leg
· Sensitive to groom, biting/kicking
· Unhappy to tack up
· Difficult to catch
· Stallion like behaviour
· Exceptionally stressy
· Excessive drinking
· Gassy and bloated
When I first bought her, she was everything I dreamed of—calm, kind, and incredibly talented. But just four months later, everything changed.
After a minor injury and a short course of danilon, my laid-back mare became almost unrecognisable. She was aggressive to groom, unpredictable to handle, and visibly uncomfortable. Vets ran endless tests. Bloods, hormone checks, bone scans—nothing conclusive. Gastroscope revealed squamous ulcers but even after the veterinary treatment for gastric ulcers was successful and her stomach scoped beautifully clean, her behaviour did not change. A referral to Leahurst found only excess fluid in the caecum. We tried steroids, omeprazole, specialist diets, chaff changes, herbal supplements, biome support… I researched obsessively, tried everything I could, but her faecal water, reactivity and stress levels remained.
💬 “I used to lead her while pushing my toddler’s buggy. Now I wore a hat and body protector just to turn her out.”
In March 2025, after commenting on an Equell Gut Food post, I reached out. You listened, really listened - on a Sunday evening! - and recommended trying Gut Food and Ulceraid.
The Turning Point
By early May, her poo was finally solid. She was drinking less. The messy faecal water down her legs was gone. She was better. The improvement in her stable cleanliness was amazing – I felt slightly crazy being excited to see solid muck not sloppy poops and loose droppings!
By late June, I dared to say it out loud:
- She was calm again.
- No more biting, kicking, or flinching when groomed.
- She was drinking normally (having drunk excessively previously)
- The farrier visit? Normal. Pleasant, even.
- She’d put on healthy condition.
- And… I’d sat on her. Hacked her out. No tummy kicking. No explosions. Just a horse being a horse.
💬 “I feel like I’m really getting her back.”
From Desperation to Hope
After years of confusion, expense, and heartache—Gut Food gave me my horse back. I still hold my breath with each new day, but she’s happy, moving forward, and I finally have hope. After doing a couple of months on Ulceraid and Gut Food together for extra support, she is now just on Gut Food and continuing to improve. I will make sure I never fun out of Gut Food because I honestly cant believe the difference.
I am so glad I messaged you and that you actually listened to me because I was starting to wonder if I could ever help this poor horse and didn’t want to give up. 5 massive stars - Thank you!
