What makes Gut Food different?
Many hindgut supplements contain prebiotics derived from only one source - inulin (chicory root). Gut Food contains over 12 sources of prebiotic fibres because horses evolved to eat 40 different plant species per day, feeding their diverse colonies of hindgut bacteria for optimal health. Modern horse management challenges digestive stability every day. Restricted grazing, monoculture paddocks, grass flushes, haylage switches, travel, stabling and stress all influence the hindgut. A gut supplement for horses like Gut Food provides a gentle, plant-powered way to help maintain hindgut balance, using:
- Polyphenol-rich botanicals
- Over 12 different natural prebiotic fibres
- Natural calcium and sodium contribute to normal digestive enzyme function and electrolyte balance
- Natural binder (sepiolite) to aid in normal removal of mycotoxins from the gut
A healthy bacteria colony produces postbiotics which support immune system and stress response. Gut Food is packed with prebiotic fibres designed to feed and support the beneficial bacteria already present in the hindgut, rather than adding more bacteria (probiotics) to a gut environment that may be lacking sufficient food sources.
Gut Food is an ideal gut balancer for any owner wanting to help provide some of the plant diversity that horses in the wild would benefit from by foraging wide terrain - variety that is often very restricted in modern horse management and diets.
When to Use
If your horse is lacking condition/shine, is bloated, has poor quality hooves, has sensitive skin or is generally not thriving – start with the hindgut. Gut Food is rich in prebiotic fibres to support postbiotic production. Particularly useful for those lacking access to paddocks with natural hedgerows or with very monoculture/bare paddocks for grazing.

FAQ’s
Customer FAQ's (feel free to ask if your question isn't answered here!)
Does Gut Food contain prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics? – Gut Food is a completely natural prebiotic fibre blend. We don’t add bacteria (probiotics) or postbiotics (derived from yeast) to this blend because it is intended to feed your horse’s existing gut colony and allow them to thrive! A healthy hindgut produces adequate levels of their own postbiotics so there is no need to add additional probiotics or postbiotics if the good bacterial colonies are healthy. You can read more on pre, pro and postbiotics by clicking here.
My horse has loose droppings, will Gut Food help? – Gut Food will help maintain your horse’s hindgut health when fed as part of their balanced diet but if they are currently struggling with very loose droppings you may want to consider our Gut Reset bundle that includes Dry Up (targeted loose dropping support to restore balance) and a 30day bag of Gut Food for long term hindgut support. You can view the bundle by clicking here.
How soon will I see results? - most customers see changes in their horse or pony within the first 14 days, from better dropping formation to coat shine and healthy condition.
My horse is recovering from treatment for ulcers and my vet recommended I maintain them on a supplement. Is this the right choice? - If your horse requires additional gastric support for maintenance after treatment for ulcers, please look at Ulceraid which is specifically targeted at the horse's stomach (but also contains prebiotic fibres, postbiotics, betaglucans, high levels of natural antioxidants and amino acids to maintain gut lining integrity and support cell regeneration). Click here to learn more on Ulceraid.
My horse only gets a handful of feed, will they eat it? - Our products are naturally based so horses find them very palatable! Introduce gradually, starting with 1/4 scoop mixed into dampened feed twice daily. All Equell products are backed by a palatability guarantee so you can return for a refund if they won’t eat it. If your horse is a good doer on restricted forage, UltraMet may be a better choice. Click here to read more.
Is it safe to give competition horses? - Equell is BETA NOPS and UFAS accredited, making Gut Food suitable for horses competing under rules by reducing the risk of prohibited substances entering out products. Competition horses typically have less turnout time and more travel stress, so a hindgut supplement can help to maintain balance and overall wellbeing.
