Güt Food - One proven prebiotic, 12+ sources of botanical diversity for targeted hindgut support

Gut Food is a 100% natural gut balancer for horses, containing a Diverse Botanical Prebiotic Matrix™ - chicory-derived inulin & FOS, plus 12 fibre-rich botanicals to safely feed the beneficial hindgut microflora without disrupting pH levels. Alfalfa-free, zero yeast formulation rich in polyphenols & antioxidants as well as natural vitamins and minerals. Supports consistent droppings, coat condition & gut wall integrity - ideal for hay/grass changes, seasonal transitions & everyday hindgut support.

Your horse's hindgut doesn't need one ingredient. It needs diversity.

Most hindgut supplements are built around a single prebiotic source, usually chicory-derived inulin. It's a genuinely well-established prebiotic and it's the foundation of Gut Food for that reason. But a horse's hindgut microbiome isn't made up of one type of bacteria looking for one type of fibre. It's an enormous, varied ecosystem and different microbial populations are equipped to make use of different plant fibres.

That's why we didn't stop at chicory. Gut Food combines over 12 natural antioxidant rich plant fibres, berries and botanicals with minerals and mycotoxin binders to comprehensively manage the unique digestive stresses domestic horses face.

Why Diversity Matters

One proven prebiotic. Chicory root is a natural source of inulin and FOS - among the most established, well-researched prebiotics available and is the foundation that Gut Food is built on.

A broader menu for the microbiome. Alongside chicory, Gut Food includes fenugreek, dandelion root, beetroot, apple, blueberries, seaweed and many more. A diverse range of plant fibres, pectins, mucilages and polyphenol-rich botanicals with naturally occuring vitamins and minerals that provide the hindgut ecosystem with genuinely varied nutritional substrates, not a single isolated fibre source. Which is why Gut Food, as a prebiotic supplement for horses, focuses on fibre variety to feed their existing colonies, rather than simply adding more bacteria.

Inspired by natural grazing behaviour. Horses evolved to browse dozens of different plants a day. Modern management that includes restricted grazing, monoculture paddocks and hay-only diets often narrows that diversity considerably, even when the total forage intake looks adequate.

Different prebiotic fibres can support different microbial populations within the hindgut - which is why we believe variety matters as much as volume.

Digestive Supplement that's ideal for use if your horse:

  • Has a sensitive digestive system
  • Experiences loose droppings when changing forage
  • Is bloated or excessively gassy
  • Is on restricted turnout, forage or box rest
  • Has a dull coat or poor quality hooves
  • Could benefit from greater fibre diversity
  • Needs daily hindgut and digestive support

    Key Benefits

    • Targeted daily support for a healthy, balanced hindgut microbiome
    • Includes sources of pectin & mucilage-forming fibres to help coat the gut lining
    • Helps maintain consistent dropping formation - useful for gassy horses or those with loose droppings
    • Rich in plant-based antioxidants to help maintain healthy cells and tissues
    • Ideal during seasonal changes, or after worming/antibiotic use, to help support the good bacteria colonies already in the hindgut

“I could see a difference after 2 weeks, his condition is loads better and he's not nipping or being flighty. Also… his grass/gas belly has gone.” Lyndsey, verified customer

    Why We Don't Add Yeast

Many gut supplements pair a prebiotic with added probiotic yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and there's nothing wrong with that approach; it works well for a lot of horses, particularly around specific challenges like antibiotic or illness recovery.

We made a deliberate choice with this equine gut balancer to focus purely on prebiotic diversity instead. Our thinking: a hindgut that's short on fibre variety doesn't necessarily need more bacteria added to it - it needs enough of the right food sources to properly sustain the bacteria already living there. Feed the existing colony well and it's well placed to do its own job - including optimal production of its own beneficial postbiotic compounds along the way.

If your horse is recovering from antibiotics, surgery, or a period of real digestive disruption, a probiotic yeast alongside your prebiotic support can be a genuinely useful addition - that's simply a different job to the one Gut Food is built to do.

    When to Use

If your horse is lacking condition or shine, is bloated, has poor quality hooves, or is generally not thriving - start with the hindgut. As a hindgut supplement for horses, Gut Food is particularly useful for those without access to paddocks with natural hedgerows, or those grazing on very monoculture or bare pasture. If your horse is on a hay only diet then choose UltraMet as it contains gut support plus 1500iu of natural vitamin E and grapeseed - to replace the vitamin E that is lacking in hay.

    FAQ’s

Does Gut Food contain prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics? Gut Food is built around chicory-derived prebiotics and a diverse matrix of natural plant fibres. We don't add bacteria (probiotics) or postbiotics to this blend as it is designed to feed your horse's existing gut colony rather than simply add to it. A well-fed, healthy hindgut colony (which already contains the bacteria that are in probiotics) is naturally well placed to produce its own postbiotics. Read more on pre-, pro- and postbiotics →

My horse has loose droppings, will Gut Food help? Gut Food will help maintain your horse’s hindgut health when fed as part of their balanced diet but if they are currently struggling with very loose droppings you may want to consider our Gut Reset bundle. It  includes Dry Up (targeted loose dropping support to help restore balance) and a 30day bag of Gut Food for longer term hindgut nourishment, so may be a better starting point.

How soon will I see results? - most customers see changes in their horse or pony within the first 14 days, from better dropping formation to coat shine and healthy condition. A genuine sign that gut health for horses is responding to consistent prebiotic support.

My horse is recovering from treatment for ulcers and my vet recommended I maintain them on a supplement. Is this the right choice? - If your horse requires additional gastric support for maintenance after treatment for ulcers, this gut supplement for horses works well alongside Ulceraid which is specifically targeted at the horse's stomach (but also contains prebiotic fibres, postbiotics, betaglucans, high levels of natural antioxidants and amino acids to maintain gut lining integrity and support cell regeneration). My horse only gets a handful of feed, will they eat it? -Our products are naturally based so horses find them very palatable! Introduce gradually, starting with 1/4 scoop mixed into dampened feed twice daily. All Equell products are backed by a palatability guarantee so you can return for a refund if they won’t eat it. If your horse is a good doer on restricted forage, UltraMet may be a better choice. Read more about UltraMet →

Is it safe to give competition horses? - Equell is BETA NOPS and UFAS accredited, making Gut Food suitable for horses competing under rules by reducing the risk of prohibited substances entering out products. Competition horses typically have less turnout time and more travel stress, so hindgut support can be a genuinely useful part of maintaining balance and wellbeing.

UlcerAid is just fabulous, made my gelding feel better and better. He can be fussy but licks the bowl clean with these! I am now hopeful I can continue his BD career without worrying the travel is effecting his tummy negatively.

Thoroughly impressed with these products. Used Muscle Up for my mare who had dropped a lot of weight due to immunity issues and I’m impressed as her weight is improving and her coat is starting to shine again. Gold Star Equell!

Not sure what to say but wow. My boy is on UlcerAid and Gut Food after turning very grumpy and unhappy, not wanting his sides touched, totally out of character started biting and nipping. He’s been on it for a couple of weeks now and the difference is actually incredible. Thank you Equell for having products that work!

I started using Equell Gut Food on a horse who had been on a lot of antibiotics. He looked very tucked up and uncomfortable. Within days he was a lot more relaxed and happier, his droppings went back to normal and he started putting weight back on. It's a very palatable supplement, all of mine happily eat it and the results show for themselves.
